NOVA Exhibition

Alexandria Campus, Northern Virginia Community College will host an exhibition of Alexandria Living Legends photographs by artist-photographer Nina Tisara, opening Monday, January 10 through February 2, .2011.  This is the first exhibition to include photographs from all three past years of the project, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Now beginning its fourth year, Living Legends of Alexandria is an ongoing, not-for-profit photo documentary project to identify, honor and chronicle those individuals whose vision and dedication have made a tangible difference to the quality of life in Alexandria. A list of the Legends may be found at http://www.tisaraphoto.com/legends/Years0711.htm

The project was conceived by artist-photographer Nina Tisara in response to requests for photographs of Alexandrians who were no longer living. When the images were not available in the Tisara archives, she devised a system for having them available in the future. Tisara, who studied Photography at Nova, now serves as project director for Living Legends of Alexandria.

Major financial sponsors of Living Legends of Alexandria in 2010 were the Rotary Club of Alexandria, Dominion Virginia Power, and McEnearney Associates. Media sponsors were Local Kicks, AlexandriaNews.org, and founding media sponsor The Alexandria Gazette Packet.

For more information about the project go to at http://www.AlexandriaLegends.com or contact Nina Tisara, AlexandriaLivingLegends@ninatisara.com

The Chet and Sabra Avery Conference Room

The Mayor and members of City Council proclaimed Tuesday, October 26, 2010 Chet and Sabra Avery Day in Alexandria and named Room 2000 in City Hall, the building's major Conference room next to City Council chambers, the Chet and Sabra Avery Conference Room.

Naming this room in their honor is extremely fitting and meaningful for they spent thousands of hours providing leadership and working on tasks from the 1970s to the present to improve opportunities and access for community residents in this conference room.

In addition to contributions to other City task forces and bodies, for over 36 years Chet Avery served on the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities to transform Alexandria into one of America's most accessible cities. He worked on the Human Rights Commission for more than 25 years advancing the rights of residents. Chet also served on the Commission on Information Technology providing media and internet access for all persons.

Congratulations, Chet and Sabra!
